Hi, I’m Melissa, the writer behind My 246 Home. I’m a wife and mother of four with a fondness for handmade crafts, sentiment towards the occasional copper accent and a heart for hospitality. My approach to hospitality is one that appreciates the balance of the Mary and Martha dichotomy where there is much to be done, yet much to just sit and be as well.

Growing up two doors down from my grandparents gave me insight into the world of love and a warm reception. Relatives from all over the country would come to visit them frequently. They had a hearty welcome where hugs were a must-both when you arrived and when you left (and a few in between). As you left their house, whether it was the first time you met them or a friend of 50 years, they would recite to you, “Come again, stay longer.” Much of the formative years of my life I was surrounded by family in our homes sharing our lives, laughter and faith. This became the construct of my future heart.

I went on to study Architecture at the University of Minnesota. I spent several years at a residential architecture firm growing my love for the home and spaces within. My career and passion took a side-step as I began work as a case manager for refugee families from all over the world-Iraq, Ukraine, Sudan, Bhutan, Somalia, Burma, etc-being invited into their homes infused with rich culture, warmth and hospitality. My family focused up-bringing, my past work designing houses and my time spent in refugee homes, have informed my desire to cherish the house, the occupants and the beautiful moments shared within that bring life to the home.

Why My 246 Home?

My husband and I started our business a few years back. We were flipping houses, which eventually turned into remodeling spaces for clients. Our business name, 246 Home, is based off the verse Acts 2:46 “They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts.” Just like the early church gave us an example of gathering together in the home, we believe that every home we work on should be filled with the warmth of love, joy, hope and faith.

This blog is the culmination of what I desire my home to be…a place of gatherings, a place of belonging, a place of hospitality, a place where we can find comfort, give grace and experience joy with those we share it with. As I share my life with you I’d like to extend a warm invite to come again and stay longer.
